Hawaiian Electric selects developer to add firm renewable energy to Maui’s power generation mix

Hawaiian Electric has chosen Ameresco Inc. as the developer for a 40-megawatt biofuel-powered generator on Maui, part of a clean energy initiative to reduce Hawaii’s reliance on imported oil. This project contributes to the state’s clean energy goals and enhances grid reliability with firm renewable energy. The proposal, along with 15 other projects, involves solar, wind, and solar-plus-storage initiatives on Maui, Hawaii Island, and Oahu. Contract negotiations with selected developers, emphasizing community outreach and benefits, will precede Public Utilities Commission review and approval, ensuring fairness and objectivity in the selection process.
