Hawaii Electric Companies Seek Approval for Purchase Power Agreements

HECO, MECO, and HELCO are seeking approval for several Purchase Power Agreements.

What is a Purchase Power Agreement? 
It’s a contract between two parties, one which generates electricity (the seller) and one which is looking to purchase electricity (the buyer-typically a utility). Contractual terms may last anywhere between 5 and 20 years, during which time the power purchaser buys energy from the electricity generator.

  • HECO has submitted an application for Approval of Energy Storage Power
    Purchase Agreement for Energy Storage Services with Kapolei Energy Storage I, LLC.  The Project will be located in Kapolei, on the island of 0‘ahu. The Facility is expected to increase Hawaiian Electric’s 2025 RPS by up to 0.15 percentage points.  (Docket No. 2020-0136)
  • HECO has submitted an application for Approval of Power Purchase Agreement for Renewable Dispatchable Generation with AES Mountain View Solar, LLC. The Project will be located in Waianae, on the island of 0‘ahu. The proposed project will be capable of generating up to 29,579 megawatt-hours (“MWh”). (Docket No. 2020-0139)
  • HECO has submitted an application for Approval of Power Purchase Agreement for Renewable Dispatchable Generation with Barbers Point Solar, LLC. The Project will be located in Kapolei, on the island of o‘ahu. The proposed project will be capable of generating up to 37,014 MWh per year. (Docket No. 2020-0143)
  • MECO has submitted an application for Approval of Power Purchase Agreement for Renewable Dispatchable Generation with Pulehu Solar, LLC. The Project will be located in Pulehu, on the island of Maui. The proposed project will be capable of generating up to 109,315 MWh per year. (Docket No. 2020-0141)
  • HELCO has submitted an application for Approval of Power Purchase
    Agreement for Renewable Dispatchable Generation with ENGIE 2020 ProjectCo-HIl LLC. The Project will be located partially within Waikoloa Village, on Hawai‘1 Island. The proposed project will be capable of generating up to 169,366 MWh per year. (Docket No. 2020-0189)
