This is a friendly reminder that the State of Hawaii Public Utilities Commission will host a hybrid informational meeting next week on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, 5:00 p.m. at the University of Hawaii Maui College where Hawaiian Electric Companies (“Hawaiian Electric”) will provide an informational presentation to the local community to learn more about Hawaiian Electric’s current operations and future plans for Maui’s electric grid.

Parking: Next to the Ike Lea Building, with entry from Wahina Piʻo Avenue, (enter from Wahina Piʻo Avenue). Additional parking is available fronting Ka‘a‘ike, and Pā‘ina buildings.

Venue Restrictions: Food and beverages are not allowed.

I. Welcome, Introductions, and Call Meeting to Order by PUC Chair Leo Asuncion – 5 minutes

II. Brief Consumer Advocate Presentation – 5 minutes

III. Hawaiian Electric Informational Presentation – 30 minutes

Hawaiian Electric’s presentation includes general information including general timing and cost components for the projects or programs discussed below.

    1. Present and Upcoming Generation Challenges:
  • Planned Kahului Power Plant closure – 2027
  • Proposed Maalaea Power Plant unit retirements
  • Maui renewable projects that have not come online
  • Other challenges.
    1. Future Generation Addition Plans:
  • Overview and status of Hawaiian Electric RFP projects on Maui (Stages 1, 2, 3, and Hawaiian Electric’s plans for future Integrated Grid Planning RFPs to procure resources)
    1. Generation Reserve Margins:
  • Current reserve margins (supply of electricity available above expected peak demand) for Maui
  • Size of various generators by unit on Maui
    1. Improvements for the Future:
  • Future improvements for Maui infrastructure resilience
  • Future Hawaiian Electric system reliability improvements on Maui
  • Hawaiian Electric Public Safety Power Shutoffs & related changes

IV. Public Comment

Following Hawaiian Electric’s presentation, the PUC invites members of the public to provide comment on any aspect of the presentation. Public comments will be limited to 3 minutes per commenter, subject to call or expansion of time by the Chair.

Submit Comments:

Comments may be submitted in writing or given orally during the meeting in-person or virtually. All written comments will be publicly accessible on the PUC’s Case and Document Management System (“CDMS”) and comments given orally during the public meeting will be publicly accessible via the recording of the meeting on the PUC’s YouTube page.

  • In-Person Comments:
    • Persons wishing to give oral comments in-person on issues on the agenda must register at the meeting location. Submission of written comments in addition to giving oral comments is highly recommended.
