February 24 – Virtual public meeting on plans for firm renewable energy on Oahu

Posted on Feb 17, 2022 in Hot Topics, Important Events

Hawaiian Electric will be hosting a virtual public meeting seeking public input prior to filing draft RFP. To help meet Hawaii’s decarbonization goals, Hawaiian Electric will file a draft Request for Proposals (RFP) for firm renewable energy procurement for Oahu. Firm renewable energy differs from intermittent resources such as solar and wind in that it is available for use at all times, except when undergoing maintenance. This has been an important part of Hawaiian Electric’s plans dating back to its 2016 Power Supply Improvement Plan.

Hawaiian Electric will host a virtual community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, to seek public input prior to filing the draft RFP.

How to join:

  • Attend via Microsoft Teams hawaiianelectric.com/communitymeetings
  • Tune in live on Hawaiian Electric’s Facebook page or live on ʻŌlelo 49.
  • Participants are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback during the meeting.

Questions can be sent in advance to [email protected]. The event will be recorded. For more information go to hawaiianelectric.com/communitymeetings.

Hawaiian Electric will be seeking proposals to acquire 500 to 700 megawatts of energy from firm renewable generation resources. Proposals also will be accepted from existing firm generation projects for new terms after conversion to using renewable fuels. If approved, the projects are expected to come online by 2031.
