Port Pilots
Every vessel involved in trade or commerce entering or departing Hawaii must employ a Hawaii licensed pilot to bring it into port. Licensed deputy port pilots are authorized to pilot vessels that are under five hundred feet in length and less than thirty feet maximum draft.
Under Hawaii law, licensed pilots are required to report incidents of significance, including collisions, oil spillage, and harbor pollution. In addition to following licensing laws and rules, pilots are required to abide by State department of transportation rules and those of the United States coast guard.
