Release: U.S. Supreme Court Invalidates Student Loan Debt Relief Plan

June 30, 2023 at 4:24 am

On June 30, 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Joe Biden’s plan announced in August 2022 to cancel up to $20,000 of student loan debt for millions of Americans was illegal. Nearly 25 million people had applied for relief as student loan payments suspended since the pandemic began in March 2020 are set to resume this fall. In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, the president announced new actions to help borrowers. This includes new repayment plans to mitigate damage to credit and the U.S. Department of Education initiating rulemaking to seek alternative ways to provide debt relief.  More information of the administration’s response is available at: https://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-new-actions-provide-debt-relief-and-support-student-loan-borrowers
