DCCA Announces Program to Measure Internet Performance Statewide
HONOLULU —The state is seeking volunteers in communities around the islands to participate in Measuring Broadband Hawaii, a program that measures consumers’ Internet speed and performance.
The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ (DCCA) Cable Television Division (CATV) is launching the program to expand Hawaii’s team of volunteers under the Federal Communications Commission’s Measuring Broadband America program, a nationwide study of consumer broadband performance. The goal of the Measuring Broadband Hawaii program is to increase the information available to consumers and policymakers about Internet service performance across the state, with special focus on rural communities.
Participants will receive free devices called “whiteboxes” that plug into their cable or DSL modem. The device runs periodic tests to measure the speed and quality of the participants’ Internet service. The boxes do NOT collect personal browsing data and will not affect the participants’ Internet experience. Participants will receive access to a personal reporting suite that allows them to monitor their own Internet service performance in real-time.
Detailed instructions on participation and a signup page are available at https://bit.ly/hibroadbandform.
The Cable Television Division regulates franchised wireline cable operators within the State of Hawaii. CATV is also charged with duties to expand broadband access and use.
