Top 4 High School Teams to Compete in the Hawaii LifeSmarts State Competition
HONOLULU – A team of students from ‘Iolani School, representing the State of Hawaii, placed second at the 2018 National LifeSmarts Championship held in San Diego, California from April 21-24. A total of 34 teams from across the nation competed in the 24th annual high school consumer education competition.
LifeSmarts is a free educational program that prepares students to enter the real world as smart consumers and tests students on their knowledge of personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities. The program is run by the National Consumers League and locally by the DCCA Office of the Securities Commissioner, in partnership with the Hawaii Credit Union League.
The team members from ‘Iolani School are: Kevan Elias (team captain), Bryson Choy, Norton Kishi, Sean Callahan, Vance Hamada and coach, James Rubasch.
The competition includes an individual written assessment on one of the five consumer topics listed above. Overall, Norton Kishi had the second highest score in the topic of Personal Finance and Sean Callahan had the fourth highest score in the topic of the Environment.
“The Hawaii team worked hard to prepare for the national championship,” said Securities Commissioner Ty Nohara. “It was a challenging competition, but the team was focused and they performed very well. We are proud of these students for displaying exceptional knowledge and outstanding sportsmanship, while representing Hawaii on a national stage.”
As part of the team’s second place finish, each student will receive a $1,000 post-secondary educational scholarship and a $100 Visa gift card. The coach received a $100 Amazon gift card and the team trophy.
