High School Teams to Compete in the 2020 HawaiiLifeSmarts State Competition

HONOLULU – The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) Office of the Securities Commissioner and Insurance Division announces the high school teams who will compete at the annual HawaiiLifeSmarts State Competition.

Teams from Iolani, Kalani, Maryknoll,and Waipahu high schools will be competing at the    in-person State Competition, which will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus Center Ballroom from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The event is open to the general public.

These teams, who first participated in the online portion of the competition, will now test their skills through written tests, a “speed smarts” activity, and gameshow style buzzer rounds at the State Competition.  The winner of the competition will represent Hawaii at the NationalLifeSmarts Competition in Washington, D.C. from April 25 – 28, 2020.

“We appreciate the time and effort of all the coaches and students who participated in this year’s online competition” said Securities Commissioner Ty Nohara. “We were excited to have some new schools join the competition this year, and we look forward to continued support from community partners. Congratulations to the four teams and good luck at the State Competition!”

LifeSmarts is a consumer education program designed to teach students in grades 6-12 about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities. The Hawaii LifeSmarts Program is sponsored by the DCCA Office of the Securities Commissioner and Insurance Division in partnership with the Hawaii Credit Union League and the National Consumers League.
