Board of Barbering and Cosmetology Application Deadline & Examination Dates

NATIONAL-INTERSTATE COUNCIL OF STATE BOARDS OF COSMETOLOGY (“NIC”) EXAMINATION

A passing score on the NIC examination is required to obtain a Hawaii Barber, Beauty Operator, or Beauty Instructor license. The testing agency, Prometric, continuously administers the NIC examination at computer-based test centers, and examination attempts are scheduled by appointment. The instructions and applications for licensure “By Exam” and “Exam Waiver” are available at: https://cca.hawaii.gov/pvl/boards/barber/application_publications/

EXAMINATION WAIVER

If you obtained a passing score on the NIC examination in another jurisdiction, you may qualify for an examination waiver. If you are unsure if your jurisdiction administered the NIC examination, please review the “Examination Waiver List” located on the last page of the “Exam Waiver” application.

APPROVAL FOR EXAMINATION

Within one week after you have been approved for examination, you will receive an email from ISO Quality Testing ([email protected]) with instructions to schedule an examination attempt. Please check your “Spam” or “Junk” email folders in the event the email is automatically filtered into those folders. If you have not received an email from ISO Quality Testing within one week after your approval, please contact the PVL Licensing Branch by phone at (808) 586-3000 from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hawaiian Standard Time, or email the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology at [email protected]
