Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund

Created in 1993, the fund is used to provide hurricane property insurance policies in Hawaii in the event they are not available in the private market. Due to increased availability of hurricane property insurance coverage from the private sector, the fund ceased writing hurricane property insurance policies effective December 1, 2000. Interest income earned is transferred to the general fund.

The Hawaii Revised Statutes creating the Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund (HRS 431P) established a board of directors as the policy making body of the fund. If at any time the board determines that the private insurance market is not making property insurance reasonably available, the fund may offer policies of hurricane property insurance for sale in Hawaii.

The Insurance Commissioner sits on the board as an ex officio voting member. If you are interested in applying to join the Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund Board, go to https://boards.hawaii.gov/.
