ITT Technical Institute Closure

Posted on Dec 27, 2017 in Slides

ITT Technical Institute announced its closure on September 6, 2016.  ITT Tech did not maintain any physical presence in Hawaii, and therefore was not required to be authorized by the State of Hawaii.  ITT Tech should be contacting its students with more information.

The Hawaii Post-Secondary Education Authorization Program (HPEAP) does not have any direct recourse for issues stemming from the closure because they were not authorized in Hawaii.  HPEAP, however, would like to provide some information about what students can do at this time, as we realize that even if ITT Tech did not have a campus in the islands, Hawaii residents may have taken online courses offered by the institution.

The two primary options for affected students is to either try and transfer credits to another institution to continue education in a comparable program or apply for a closed school loan discharge.  These options apply to those that were currently enrolled at the time of closure, or withdrew from ITT within 120 days of September 6, 2016.
Please keep in mind that there is no guarantee that another school you decide to enroll in will accept transfer of the credits you earned from ITT. Here is a link regarding the definition of a comparable program to avoid voiding a loan discharge: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/about/announcements/closed-school#comparable-program

If you have questions about the student loan discharge process or continuing your education at a different institution, please contact your student loan servicer. Here’s a link that includes a list of servicers: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/understand/servicers

Students can currently request copies of their transcript at https://itt-tech.info/
Other information, including catalogs and course syllabi, is also available on the website. It is unclear how long ITT will maintain the website so students should gather what they need from ITT sooner rather than later.

Students who graduated in 2001 or thereafter may obtain copies of their transcript through Parchment Inc. (https://www.parchment.com)
Alternatively, students can submit a request to search for physical records at the central storage facility in Indianapolis, GRM Document Management (https://www.grmdocumentmanagement.com/us/indianapolis-document-storage-information-management)

HPEAP is also following developments on who will manage student records when ITT discontinues the service on their website, and will update this page when that information becomes available.  HPEAP will NOT have access to student records.

Former students seeking a 1098-T tax form for their tuition payments can go to this website: https://heartland.ecsi.net/index.main.html#/access/lookup
